How To Prepare For A Game Update

I cannot count the times I've heard simmers complain about their game crashing, lagging, or behaving badly to the point that it is no longer playable, and I also cannot count the times I've heard other simmers remind them about the drill for when there is an update coming.  I, myself, still forget sometimes, so I thought of making a list of these reminders to, well, remind myself, and maybe help you guys be reminded, too. Here is a text version but feel free to watch the VIDEO GUIDE if you want visuals.

REMINDERS BEFORE AN UPDATE:

Although the game automatically disables mods and CCs during an update, there are still instances where an update messes up the game because of them.  This can also happen when you repair your game but failed to take your mods and CCs out beforehand. So, to avoid that, follow these simple precautionary measures:

1)
DISABLE AUTOMATIC UPDATES IN ORIGIN, EA APP, or STEAM (if you bought your game from Steam). This is to make sure that your game will not update on its own so you will have time to take out your mods before the update so your saves don't get corrupted;

2) BACK UP YOUR USER DATA. This is just so you don't lose anything after the update. Believe me, I've heard many horror stories about this from a lot of simmers you don't want to be one of them;

3) REMOVE MODS AND CCs. Game updates can introduce new bugs, so taking out your mods and custom contents before a game update makes it easier to identify legit game bugs with mods/CCs ruled out.  Additionally, doing this ensures that your saves don't get corrupted, so remember to do this ALWAYS!

4) DELETE THE LOCALTHUMBCACHE. This step is VERY IMPORTANT! Skipping this step can cause major issues in your game.  We do this to make sure whatever changes we made in our Mods folder are applied.  If you removed mods from your Mods folder, not deleting this file leaves fragments of the mods/CCs you removed which can corrupt your saves or cause your game to behave weirdly. Delete this file not only when you add or remove mods and CCs, but as often as you can as it can accumulate data over time and may slow down or worse, crash your game.

5) UPDATE YOUR GAME IN
 ORIGIN, EA APP or STEAM.

AFTER AN UPDATE:

1)
RUN YOUR GAME VANILLA (No Mods or Custom Contents) ON A NEW GAME OR FACTORY RESET to test for game bugs after the update. Play a bit and observe. If you find anything unusual, take note of your last key action and details that you think might help troubleshoot the problem.  If not, go ahead and update your mods so you can start playing;

2) CHECK IF MODS ARE ENABLED Every time The Sims 4 updates, mods and custom contents are automatically disabled when you first launch your game after updating, so if you're playing with mods and CCs, remember to enable them in your game settings when you are ready to play.

3) Should you encounter issues after testing your mods, follow this TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE to help you resolve it.
